THE EFFECT OF THE CHANGES OF THE CLIMATE TO THE MOUNT KILIMANJARO

HIVI NDIVYO MUONEKANO WA MLIMA KILIMANJARO KILELENI.

THE EFFECT OF THE CHANGES OF THE CLIMATE IN MOUNT KILIMANJAROWhile the climate change and Mount Kilimanjaro can cause the effect through the volcano which appears to be dormant on the inside, events on top of the mountain. In this case it can draw global attention. The top of the mountain has seen a retreat of the most recent covering of glaciers, with the most recent ice cap volume dropping . Sources disagree when the glaciers will be gone due to melting. In 2002, a study led that ice core predicted that ice on mount Kilimanjaro would be gone between 2015 and 2020 .In 2007, a team of Austrian scientists from University of Innsbruck, predicted that the plateau ice cap will be gone by 2040, but some ice on the slope will remain longer due to local weather conditions . A study by Philip Mote of the University of Washington in the United States and George Kaiser of the University of Innsbruck in Austria concludes that the shrinking that the ice of Mount Kilimanjaro is not directly due to rising temperature but rather to decreased precipitation. Even though, the volcano appears to be dormant, events on top have been drawing global attention recently. The glaciers are rapidly disappearing. Over the past 100 years , the ice cap has reduced by over 80%. In 2002, a study by Ohio State University ice core expert Lonnie Thompson predicted that ice would be gone between 2015 and 2020. Though the cause of the reduction in ice volume is in dispute, the loss of the ice of mount Kilimanjaro will carry implications for the local economy who depend on water from their ice field during the dry seasons and rains failure.
